What to expect...
1st visit
During the initial acupuncture session, the acupuncturist will take a thorough history, perform a physical examination and begin an acupuncture prescription (treatment plan) that is unique to each individual. She will also utilize diagnostic tools that are specific to traditional Chinese medicine such as tongue and pulse diagnosis. Initial visits generally last from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the complexity of the health concern presented. Follow up appointments range from 30-45 minutes. It is important to wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to acupuncture points. Do not eat large meals just before or after your visit. Refrain from overexertion, working out, drugs or alcohol for up to six hours after visit. Write down any questions and make note of any pain or symptoms you may have on the day of your visit. During acupuncture treatment, the patient is generally asked to lie on the treatment table. The skin is cleaned with an alcohol swab to prepare for needling. All needles used during treatment are sterile and disposable. The acupuncturist will concentrate on specific acupoints along the meridian pathways based on the patient’s issues and symptoms. The patient may feel a sensation of heaviness where the needle is inserted. In some cases, the sensation may be like a tiny electric shock that travels along the course of the meridian. Once the needle is inserted, the needle is generally left in the body for 15-30 minutes allowing time for the therapeutic effect to occur. The therapeutic effect of needling relates to the movement of qi (pronounced chee) or vital energy. This is a subjective sensation felt both by the practitioner and the patient. At the end of the treatment, the needle is removed from the patient and the acupoint is compressed with a sterile cotton swab. Depending on the condition being treated, other forms of acupuncture could also be used, such as moxibustion (acupuncture with heat) and acupressure techniques. |
