The Wellness LifestyleWellness is a term we all must become more familiar with because wellness is the wave of our future. Whether we like it or not, we are living longer than our parents and our grandparents so we now have a need for this new approach to health. Wellness means taking care of the body daily with a veggie full diet, proper movement and quiet meditation. This daily checklist for wellness is a simple tool to be used as a guideline to create healthy habits that over time are guaranteed to move you toward wellness and away from disease.
Moving WELL If there was a pill that had even half of the benefits as movement, everyone would be taking that pill and paying lots of money for it. Moving your body has documented benefits for almost every ailment known to man. It makes you feel better by bringing oxygen to the cells and lubrication to the joints. It makes you look better by improving muscle tone and posture. It even makes you smile more by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. We are mostly familiar with active forms of movement like hiking, yoga & weight lifting but most people don’t know that passive forms of movement are just as important to your health. Chiropractic and Massage are 2 of the most widely used forms of passive movement. These treatment modalities restore normal movement to injured, fixated joints and tight, painful muscles which if not corrected create pain & decreased health. Movement is a required nutrient that we just aren’t getting enough of. So if you can make it a goal to move more than you sit each day through both passive and active forms of movement, you’ll be on your way to wellness. Eating WELL Considering that our most genetically similar cousin is an Ape doesn’t it make sense that we should eat like one? Most nutritionists think so. There was a recent British study done where 9 volunteers were put on a diet exactly mimicking that of an Ape. After 12 days of eating buckets full of raw fruit and vegetables and small amounts of nuts, honey and cooked oily fish the volunteers lost weight and saw their blood pressure and cholesterol levels improve. The average volunteer lost almost 10 pounds, their cholesterol levels dropped 23 percent, and their average blood pressure fell from 140/83 (very nearly hypertensive) to 122/76. The health benefits experienced by the volunteers occurred most likely because switching from a “civilized” diet based mostly in processed foods to one based on an abundance of fruits, vegetables & lean protein (not just 1 apple a day) is bound to have a beneficial effect. So, when your choosing your meals think like an Ape and you’re bound to lose weight and improve your health. But without the proper balance of quiet time and attention to your emotional well being, this pace will wear down our immune systems and deplete our hormone levels leading us toward stress induced insomnia, anxiety and depression. A simple solution proven over 30 years of research to reverse the harmful effects of stress is Meditation. Simply sitting quietly for 10 minutes a day and actively concentrating on your breathe a phrase or an image, is enough to lower blood pressure and increase immune function. Time magazine recently had a front page article on Meditation which reported that meditation is a powerful tool to combat the damaging effects of stress. Eating Well, Moving Well and Thinking Well everyday creates healthy habits that over time are guaranteed to move you toward wellness and away from disease. | Testimonial"My daughter and I get adjusted every month just to keep our heads on straight!
